Wynona Ryder opened up about having been sexually harassed in her late 20s and early 30s, which had an impact on her love of filmmaking. The actress recently talked candidly about this in an interview.
The Stranger Things actress talked about this experience, which had a significant impact on both her personal and professional lives, in an interview with Esquire (article published on August 29). She told the interviewer that she had a few unpleasant situations with certain people who had just “blatantly” harassed her sexually, but she would not name them.
Ryder thought to himself, “It was not an attack. However, it was totally out of place. It was crazy. I genuinely comprehend the suffering endured by Harvey Weinstein’s victims and others. Because she was a well-known actress, she considered herself “lucky” that the incidence did not happen to her more than once. “I recall this sensation in your head: You are negotiating, you are contemplating what might happen if you say something,” she continued. As you work things out, this person is being really spooky.”
The star of Edward Scissorhands claimed that until she shared these moments with Jenna Ortega—who co-stars with her in the upcoming movie Beetlejuice Beetlejuice—she had no idea how disturbing they were.
Eventually, Ryder began to retract the unwanted advances. She claimed that she would react with a “Ha ha!” and take proper action if someone was making inappropriate or inebriated advances toward her. The actress claimed that when someone touched her, it felt “intrusive.”
This had a significant impact on Heathers star, and it altered her perception of Hollywood. “In retrospect, it really soured” her feelings about making movies, she said. Ryder acknowledged that all of the great performers had always advised her to get out there when something was no longer so “amazing,” and Ryder took that advice to heart.
Over her many years in the industry, the actress became very well-known. She made a comeback to the screens in the years following her notorious 2001 shoplifting incident, appearing in several high-profile projects like Black Swan, A Scanner Darkly, and The Stranger Things.
The much-awaited movie Beetlejuice is Ryder’s next project. On September 6, 2024, Beetlejuice will be released.
