Why Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez marriage ended: Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez never officially addressed the rumors that were starting to circulate in the spring regarding a potential marital rupture.
However, Lopez, 55, let her behavior speak for itself on Tuesday, August 20. She secretly filed for divorce on that day, which was the second anniversary of the wedding ceremony she and 52-year-old Affleck hosted at his 87-acre estate just outside of Savannah, Georgia.
In addition, she requested that the court revert her legal last name from Affleck to Lopez. A legal source said the filing “speaks a ton.”
The gorgeous pop juggernaut and the more quiet Oscar-winning actor-director did, in fact, have difficulty reconciling their contrasting personalities—just as they did when they originally divorced back in 2004. Lopez cited “irreconcilable differences” in her divorce petition.
“They are very different people,” a person with direct knowledge of the stars said. “He is more of an introvert and prefers to spend his time at home, while she is very outgoing and social.”
Affleck was prone to “mood swings,” with “big highs and big lows,” according to a different source. The person he claimed to be and the person he actually was were two different persons.
An Affleck source continues, “He does not understand how his bad mood affects people around him.” This shadow loomed over the relationship.
According to the person who is acquainted with both Affleck and Lopez, the ex-couple, who tied the knot less than a year after their reunion, were swept up in the hype surrounding Bennifer 2.0.
“It happened swiftly,” the insider continues. Who would not fall head over heels for two people who were madly in love? They were truly in love with one another.
As to the fifth insider, Lopez is “heartbroken,” even though he initiated the divorce.
She is a realist, though, and realized at that point that the marriage could not be saved. Lopez stated that April 26 was the day they separated, and in fact, the most of the previous four months were spent apart.
She was in the New York City area when the two officially separated, working on a musical adaptation of Kiss of the Spider Woman (which she co-produced with Affleck), finishing up rehearsals for her This Is Me…Live summer tour, which she postponed on May 31 in order “to be with her children, family, and close friends,” according to a statement from her representatives.
While filming The Accountant 2, Affleck returned to Los Angeles, lodging in a rental home a short distance from the Beverly Hills estate the couple purchased in 2023 (which they put up for sale for $68 million in July).
In the late spring, the two would sometimes get back together, usually for activities involving their blended family: Affleck and his ex-wife, actress Jennifer Garner, 52, have children together, Violet, 18, Seraphina, 15, and Samuel, 12, while Lopez and her ex-husband, singer Marc Anthony, 55, have twins, Max and Emme, 16 years old.
According to the insider, Lopez continued to hope that she and her husband could find a way ahead throughout that period.
The fifth source claims, “She tried really hard to make things work.” Affleck, however, was not as involved. In July, while Lopez was visiting her Hamptons home on the East Coast, Affleck purchased a $20 million residence in Los Angeles.
Although an Affleck insider refers to romance rumors as “garbage,” two insiders claim he has been discreetly spending time with actress Kick Kennedy, 36, the daughter of former US presidential candidate Bobby Kennedy Jr., since June. Undoubtedly, nothing is happening. They might not even be acquainted.
However, according to a Lopez insider, Affleck was not showing his wife “any signs that he wants to continue their marriage.” “She now needs to prioritize taking care of herself,”
Matrimonial attorney Marilyn Chinitz of Blank Rome LLP points out that Lopez filed for divorce on her own, without the assistance of an attorney.
Chinitz, who does not represent Affleck or Lopez, believes that Lopez was merely making a statement that said, “I am moving forward, I am filing, and I am doing it on my own,” and that she was probably simply trying to get this done.
Knowing that Affleck and Lopez are no longer together, insiders predict that the fallout will not be too dramatic. The earlier source, who brought up Affleck’s highs and lows, said, “It is civil.” “There is a lot of respect and love there, as well as sadness.”
