The news that Frey and Peterson were having an affair reached the police about a week after Laci went missing. Although Frey claimed Peterson had told her he was a widower when they had first met the month before, she nonetheless recognised Peterson from the media coverage.
Later on, Frey became a key witness against Peterson during his trial, providing details of their affair and testifying for several days. Peterson had no idea that Frey, who was collaborating with the police, had secretly taped their phone calls during which he had lied to Frey about where he was and what he was doing.
For the first time in more than two decades, Peterson is speaking up in a video interview for Peacock’s Face to Face with Scott Peterson, which goes live on August 20. For the first time, Peterson talked about his affair in the documentary. He acknowledged that it was “a–hole to be having sex outside our marriage,” but he denied that he had killed his wife.
In the documentary, he responded to the prosecution’s claims that he killed his wife because he was not ready to be a parent and wanted to end their marriage without having to pay child or spousal support, saying, “That is so offensive and so disgusting.”
“I absolutely regret cheating on Laci,” he concluded. It had to do with my naive lack of self-worth, my selfish travels, and the loneliness I felt that evening not being at home. When someone wants to have sex with you, it makes you feel fantastic.

Who is Amber Frey?
Late in 2002, Frey became well-known after revealing herself as Peterson’s mistress. She was a massage therapist and a single mother at the time. She quickly emerged as a key figure in the Peterson trial and has been strongly associated with the case in the two decades that it has been public.
Now, Frey will be included in the Netflix documentary American Murder: Laci Peterson, which will be released in August 2024 and re-examines the circumstances surrounding the disappearance in 2002.
At the time of our first meeting, I was residing in Madera, Rolling Hills. As Frey said in the documentary, “I had just graduated from massage school and my really good friend at the time told me about this guy that she had met.” She described him as attractive, humorous, easy to talk to, and seeking “the one.” That was something I was open to and wanted in my life as a single mother.
How did Peterson and Frey meet?
In her 2005 book, Witness: For the Prosecution of Scott Peterson, Frey described how she and Peterson were initially set up by Frey’s closest friend, Shawn Sibley. A few weeks after Sibley had met Peterson at a convention in Anaheim, California, Frey claimed in the first chapter of her memoir that she had first met him on November 20, 2002, at the Elephant Bar in Fresno, California.
After Peterson told Sibley he was searching for a “committed relationship,” the massage therapist recalled how, as a single mother of one girl, she was wanting to settle down and assumed Peterson wanted the same thing.
After meeting at the bar, Peterson asked Frey if they could go to his hotel room so he could change, instead of going to dinner as scheduled. She accepted and was struck by how assured he came across.
“On the way, Scott said, ‘I was a little apprehensive about meeting you,’ but he did not look nervous to me. She noted in her book that “he seemed relieved and was grinning.”
When Frey learnt that Peterson’s wife was missing, what action did she take?
Peterson contacted Frey on December 9, 2002, informing her that he had an urgent message for her. In the Netflix documentary, Frey revealed that he had “lied about being married” and that he had truly “‘lost’ his wife and this would be the first holidays without her.” Prior to this, he had told her that he had never been married.
With all of his feelings, she remarked, “I did not want to pry; he will share what he feels comfortable with.” “He hoped nothing had changed and apologised for lying to me.”
Frey wrote the incident down as a white lie and continued with the partnership. But a few weeks later, Frey received a newspaper clipping from a friend that showed Peterson’s pregnant wife missing, which left the massage therapist “shocked.”
Frey went to the police on December 30 and gave them all the proof she had of their affair, including pictures from a holiday party they went to on December 14, even though Laci was at another party that day.
To catch Frey lying, the police immediately had him secretly record their conversations with Peterson. They were effective, as Peterson was discovered lying to Frey the next day about being traveling in Paris during a candlelight vigil for his wife.
The week after, on a call on January 6, Frey addressed Peterson regarding his wife’s disappearance, pressing him to elaborate on his description of her as “lost,” based on what he had told her the month before. Peterson, though, said he was unable to provide her with an explanation.
He said, “She… she is alive.” He confessed to lying to Frey later in the call, stating, “I said that I lost my wife.” Yes, I did. Amber, there are various types of loss.
In response to Frey voicing her worries, he said, “Sweetheart, do you believe I was involved in her disappearance? That is not who I am.
The police told Laci’s family about the affair the next week, on January 15, 2003, and on January 23, Frey gave a speech at a press conference.
She said, “Scott told me he was not married.” “Yes, we were romantically involved.”
Following the press conference, Frey was the focus of a media frenzy. She also made contact with Dennis and Sharon Rocha, Laci’s parents, and mentioned how friendly Sharon had been to her.
Sharon enquired as to whether I would be willing to meet with her. I promised to do so. up the documentary, Frey revealed, “She had a calendar, and she wanted to fill it up. She required confirmation as to whether he was indeed working with you or not. Even what he gave them to believe about Scott is not true.
