The last person to see her was her husband, Scott Peterson. When Laci vanished on Christmas Eve 2002, she was expecting their son, Conner. It took until April 2003 to find her body and fetal remnants. The evidence against Scott Peterson made him the main suspect. The way Laci Peterson vanished

They discovered Laci was not at home when Sharon verified that she was missing. They arranged a search with friends and relatives after reporting her disappearance to the police. Before heading out to the Berkeley Marina to go fishing, Scott had been the last person to see Laci. He went back and showered and changed his clothing before calling his mother-in-law.
Although Laci had been spotted walking their dog, McKenzie, at their neighbourhood park, no trustworthy witnesses were able to corroborate her sighting. Later, after a neighbour discovered McKenzie wandering, Scott spotted her in their yard still wearing her leash. Laci had been pregnant for more than eight months when she vanished.

After the foetal remains of Laci Peterson’s unborn baby were found earlier, her torso was found on the shore of San Francisco Bay on April 14, 2003. Despite the district attorney’s initial objection to moving forward without Laci’s body, this development prompted detectives to charge Scott Peterson with her murder.
Investigations into the case focused on Scott Peterson’s covert trips to Brooks Island, where Laci and Conner’s bodies were discovered. Detectives noticed that, although he claimed to fish at the Berkeley Marina, each time he went to Brooks Island, he always seemed to be looking for something onshore.
Following the discovery of the remains in San Francisco Bay, Scott Peterson was taken into custody in San Diego in 2003. He was captured after wiretap monitoring near the Mexican border. Peterson had grown a beard and coloured his hair orange at the time of his arrest.
Investigators discovered a number of items in his possession, including knives, cell phones, shovels, credit cards, and identification belonging to him and his family, as well as $15,000 in cash. These materials suggested he was getting ready to leave for Mexico. Although Scott’s family thought he was in San Diego to spend time with them, the evidence suggested he was probably preparing to flee to Mexico in order to avoid being charged with murder.

In order to prevent media prejudice, Scott Peterson’s trial was moved to San Mateo County. Under the direction of Mark Geragos, the defence team contended that all of the evidence was circumstantial, and that the prosecution was unable to determine Laci Peterson’s cause of death or exact moment of death. Two jurors who were highlighted in a documentary claimed that they did not think Peterson was guilty until his secret lover Amber Frey testified and proved how strong the defence was.
In November 2002, Scott Peterson and Amber Frey started dating. When Scott said he had lost his wife and had purchased a boat to dispose of her remains, their friendship grew closer. Because Amber Frey complied with the police, their phone conversations were videotaped and used as vital evidence during the trial. Both these recordings and her testimony had a big impact on the jury’s verdict.
Not only did Scott lie to Amber, but his acts implicating him and his self-serving comments contradicting each other marked a turning point in the case. Scott was found guilty after just ninety minutes of deliberation by the jury. His death sentence was first upheld, but on July 24, 2020, it was overturned because of concerns about jury bias with regard to the capital penalty. For the murders of Laci Peterson and their unborn child, Scott Peterson was given a life sentence without the possibility of release.
