Taylor Swift endorses Kamala Harris during the presidential debate: In the 2024 presidential contest, Kamala Harris has the formal support of Taylor Swift. The artist made the statement shortly after Harris concluded her first debate with her opponent, former president Donald Trump.

Swift, 34, wrote on Instagram, “Like many of you, I watched the debate tonight,” with a picture of herself cuddling a kitten. “Now is a fantastic opportunity, if you haven’t already, to learn more about the problems at hand and the positions these candidates take on the subjects that are most important to you. As a voter, I make it a point to learn as much as possible about the proposed laws and plans for this nation.”

Swift then brought up the fictitious AI pictures that purportedly showed her supporting Trump, who shared them himself on truth social.

“It really conjured up my fears around AI, and the dangers of spreading misinformation,” Swift wrote. It made me realize that, as a voter, I must be really open about my true intentions for this election. The truth is the most straightforward weapon against false information.

“I will be throwing my vote for Kamala Harris & Tim Walz in the 2024 President Election,” she continued. “I’m supporting @kamalaharris in my vote because I think she is a warrior for the rights and causes that need to be supported. I think she is a calm, capable leader, and if she leads us instead of leading chaos, I think we can accomplish so much more in this country. Her choice of running mate, @timwalz, who has fought for decades for IVF rights, LGBTQ+ rights, and a woman’s right to her own body, inspired and impressed me much.”

“I’ve made my decision after doing my research. You are the only one who can conduct the research and make the decision. Additionally, I want to remind everyone—especially new voters—that you must be registered in order to cast a ballot. I also think casting a ballot early is considerably simpler. In my story, I’ll include a link to register and information about early voting days.”

After that, Swift signed the statement as a “Childless Cat Lady,” alluding to J.D. Vance, Trump’s running mate from 2021.

In response to Swift’s endorsement, Harris’ running mate, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, said to anchor Rachel Maddow on MSNBC during the network’s post-debate coverage, “I am incredibly grateful, first and foremost, to Taylor Swift.” As a fellow feline owner, I say that as well.

“That was clear and eloquent,” the sixty-year-old politician said. “And to stand up is the kind of courage we need in America.”

“We’ve seen it from those Republicans who attended the Democratic National Convention, and we’ve seen it from women who prefer to keep their private lives private but are compelled to go public because they almost died because they were unable to access abortion services while pregnant,” Walz continued. “And now someone like Taylor Swift has emerged and made that very evident.”

“This will be the opportunity, Swifties — KamalaHarris.com — get on over there, give us a hand, get things going,” he said, addressing Swift’s fan base.

Earlier in the 2020 election season, Swift publicly endorsed both Senator Joe Biden and Senator Harris, becoming the first person to do so.

Swift made her endorsement known at the time by sharing her cover photo for the Thought Leaders issue of V Magazine on Instagram and writing, “I spoke to @vmagazine about why I’ll be voting for Joe Biden for president.”

Her post from October 2020 coincided with Mike Pence and Kamala Harris’ vice-presidential debate. Swift declared in an Instagram post that she would “be watching and supporting @kamalaharris by yelling at the TV a lot.”

The singer-songwriter’s decision to come forth with her political opinions after keeping them quiet for the majority of her career was shown in the 2019 Netflix documentary Miss Americana. She cries as she asks permission to declare her positions clearly in front of her father, Scott Swift, at a board meeting that is exclusively male.

Swift has spoken up on several political matters since the movie, with a focus on encouraging more people to cast ballots. Before the 2020 election, she criticized then-President Trump for impeding mail-in voting and urged voters to “request a ballot early.”

On National Voter Registration Day in 2023, she posted something on Instagram that sparked a rush that resulted in 35,000 new voters. The singer of “You Need to Calm Down” had earlier that year urged her Nashville admirers to take part in local and state elections.
