Nick Carter claims Melissa Schuman: In response to Melissa Schuman’s complaint in which she accused him of sexual assault, Nick Carter has filed a formal response. In a countersuit filed on Tuesday, August 13, and obtained, the Backstreet Boys vocalist refutes Schuman’s allegations while seeking a $2.5 million settlement.

According to court documents that PERSONS was able to obtain at the time, Carter filed his lawsuit more than a year after Schuman, 39, sued him for abuse and sexual assault in April 2023. She said that after they co-starred in the 2003 teen drama The Hollow, 44-year-old Carter invited her to visit his Santa Monica, California, flat. Schuman said that Carter gave her a sedative and sexually abused her not long after she and her friend arrived at his flat. The two of them were eighteen.

Carter said in his counterclaim, which was submitted on July 26 to the Superior Court of California in Los Angeles County, that Schuman—the lead vocalist of the 1990s girl group Dream—lied when she originally accused him of sexual assault on her blog in 2017. Later, according to Carter’s lawsuit, she supported her accusations in multiple interviews.

at her lawsuit, Carter claims that between September 2023 and May 2024, Schuman made multiple defamatory remarks after she identified him as her rapist at news conferences, a documentary, and on social media. He maintains that their sex was consensual and that her accusations are an attempt to jumpstart her “dwindling career.”

According to Carter’s complaint, Schuman made the remarks “with a specific intent to damage Carter’s reputation and interfere with his business opportunities, advantages and contracts,” even though Schuman is well aware of Carter’s commercial transactions.

Carter refuted “each and every” allegation Schuman made against him in her complaint through the representation of his lawyers. According to Westlaw Today, the unclean hands doctrine is “an equitable defense that bars relief to a party who has engaged in inequitable behavior,” and he claimed that her case “fails to state facts” and that it should be dismissed due to the statute of limitations.

Additionally, according to the records, Schuman’s accusation was not filed in a sincere manner and that “Carter did not sexually assault” her. The rest of the filing refutes any effort on Carter’s part to “cover up” her accusations.

Additionally, it refutes claims made by Shannon Ruth, who filed a lawsuit against Carter in December 2022 alleging sexual battery. Ruth claimed Carter sexually assaulted her on a tour bus in 2001 when she was seventeen, and Carter responded by filing a countersuit in Nevada.

In a move submitted in May, Carter asked the court to give him summary judgement over Ruth’s allegations “for sexual battery, intentional infliction of emotional distress, and negligent infliction of emotional distress.” He also requested a hearing.

In that petition, he mentioned Schuman as well.

“Carter’s California counterclaim makes the same arguments as his stalled Nevada lawsuit, and both show that his approach to defend sexual assault claims is to attack the victims,” said Karen Barth Menzies, Schuman’s attorney, in a statement in response to Carter’s most recent filing, which was received by people.
