In a new movie, Emilia Jones plays Reality Winner, which is based on the life of a former NSA contractor. On August 29, Vertical unveiled the movie’s trailer, which was shared only with PEOPLE.
Jones, who gained notoriety for her part in CODA, portrays Winner, a person who gained notoriety for disclosing confidential information to the press. Winner’s life is glimpsed in the teaser, starting with her childhood in Texas. From her early years to her tenure in the US Air Force and her current role at the National Security Agency (NSA), it chronicles her life.
The movie centers on Winner’s pivotal choice to provide The Intercept with sensitive data, which exposed Russian efforts to influence the 2016 US presidential election. Because of the leak, Winner was detained and given a sentence of more than four years in jail.
In addition to examining the political and legal repercussions of Winner’s conduct, the movie digs into her personal life to shed light on the events and reasons behind her disclosure of sensitive information. When Jones was researching the part, she developed a close friendship with Winner, which she disclosed to Indiewire in January. Jones stated, “This is exactly what we aim to achieve with the film—humanize her and illustrate that she is much more than a mere headline.”
In HBO’s 2023 film Reality, Jones portrayed Winner, opposite Sydney Sweeney. It was taken from Winner’s interview transcript with FBI agents on June 3, 2017.
