One of the two doctors accused in Matthew Perry’s death, Dr. Mark Chavez, has agreed to a plea deal in which he will likely acknowledge his guilt on drug-related charges.

On Friday, August 30, the doctor, who is 54 years old, showed up in the Roybal Federal Courthouse together with four other people who are accused in Matthew Perry’s case. Perry’s three ketamine doses caused his death.

In addition, Chavez is charged with organizing the ketamine distribution as he acknowledged selling the drug to Dr. Salvador Plasencia, who then gave it to Kenneth Iwamasa, the Friends actor’s assistant. According to NBC News, ABC News, and the Associated Press, U.S. Magistrate Judge Jean Rosenbluth accepted the prosecutor’s plea agreement, and Chavez complied. He was freed from custody but was subject to the revocation of his medical license and a $50,000 USD cash bond.

Chavez’s attorney, Matthew Binninger, reportedly stated that his client is deeply saddened and eager to make amends.

“He is doing everything in his power to cooperate, to help in this situation, and he is incredibly remorseful,” Binninger stated in reference to Chavez, according to the Associated Press.

Additionally, the prosecutors declared that Chavez might be imprisoned for a total of ten years. After receiving the plea agreement, Binninger went on to claim that Chavez was aware of the probe’s depth because it was conducted by federal government agents, emphasizing that his client was “prepared to make amends.”

Running a ketamine clinic, Chavez admitted to taking the drug that was part of his business and giving it to Plasencia, who was not a patient. Additionally, according to the prosecution, Chavez obtained the medications by lying to the wholesaler and using a fake prescription made under the name of a previous patient.

Dr. Salvador Plasencia, Jasveen Sangha, Matthew Perry’s helper Kenneth Iwamasa, and Perry’s buddy Erik Fleming—who is suspected of orchestrating the ketamine deal—are among the other defendants in the death of Matthew Perry.
