In the film Child Stars, Demi Lovato makes her directorial debut discussing the same topic as the title. The actress-singer will accompany Lovato in her endeavours, along with numerous other celebrities who rose to popularity in their youth, like Drew Berrymore.
The singer, who has worked on several Disney projects, agreed to talk to The Hollywood Reporter about their next collaboration. Lovato was passed over for the parts for a long time before landing them. Lovato wanted to make a name for herself, much like Miley Cyrus and Selena Gomez.
This was very much the honeymoon phase of her career, she told the publication, adding, “I was filled with gratitude and there was this sense of wonder and excitement right before the train got moving in a way where I could not pump the brakes.”
The singer started her career with Barney & Friends. Years later, in 2008, she starred in the first Camp Rock movie. She launched her debut solo album that same year, and she has since released seven more. She disclosed in her Simply Complicated documentary that she did cocaine for the first time at the age of 17.
She released one more song in 2018 called “Sober,” which discussed her relapse after becoming sober. That same year, she was admitted to the hospital after it appeared that she had overdosed. She disclosed in 2021 that she has given up booze and all narcotics.
Many celebrities who began their careers as kids have chosen to come forward in recent years to discuss the purported trauma they endured on set. ID’s Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV, which discussed producer Dan Scheidner and the allegations levelled against him—including abuse—went viral on the internet.
Among many others, it included Alexia Nikolas and Drake Bell. According to Forbes, the defendant later filed a defamation lawsuit against the show is network, calling the program a “hit job.”
Lovato stated in an interview with the Hollywood Reporter that she needs to consider her initial motivation for entering this field. In addition to her, the project will include Kenan Thompson, Jojo Siwa, Drew Barrymore, and numerous others.
This documentary differs from the ID’s endeavour in that it does not single out any individual or business. Producer Michael D. Ratner stated that the history of child celebrity will be revealed “from Shirley Temple to Tiktok,” as reported by the publication.
On September 17, 2024, the documentary will be available to stream on Hulu.
