76th Primetime Emmy Awards: With her performance in The Bear, Liza Colón-Zayas became the first Latina to win Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy at the 2024 Emmy Awards. GO ON

At the 2024 Emmy Awards, Liza Colón-Zayas created history by winning Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series, making her the first Latina to do so. Her portrayal of Tina in the popular FX series The Bear brought her the honor. She praised her husband David Zayas in her poignant acceptance speech for encouraging her to prepare a speech even though she hadn’t planned to win. She said she was shocked to be nominated in the same category as such legendary actors as Carol Burnett and Meryl Streep.

During her speech, Colón-Zayas specifically addressed Latinas, encouraging them to keep voting and to have faith in themselves. She exhorted them with emotion, “Vote for your rights.” She also expressed her gratitude to the actors and crew of The Bear for providing her a “new life” on the show.

Colón-Zayas’s first Emmy nomination and win occurred with this one. She described the enormity of the acknowledgment in an interview conducted before to the event, referring to it as “epic” for ladies and people who resembled her as well as for herself.

Ebon Moss-Bachrach and Jeremy Allen White, Colón-Zayas’s co-stars, also won acting prizes as part of The Bear’s outstanding performance at the Emmys. Christopher Storer, the show’s creator, took home the Best Directing in a Comedy award, raising the series’ overall victories to an unprecedented 11 in a single season and surpassing the 10 it received the previous year. The 76th Emmy Awards, which honored a night of outstanding performances and noteworthy accomplishments, were broadcast live from the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles and co-hosted by Eugene and Dan Levy.
