killing three girls after stabbing: Three young girls were stabbed to death at a dance and yoga class in Southport, England, with a Taylor Swift theme. A 17-year-old male has been charged with their murders.

The knife attack occurred on Monday, July 29 at approximately 11:50 a.m. local time. The teenager has been charged with the murders of Bebe King, 6, Elsie Dot Stancombe, 7, and Alice Dasilva Aguiar, 9. This information was confirmed by Merseyside Police in a news release obtained by PEOPLE in the early hours of Thursday, August 1.

According to the press release, the 17-year-old is also accused with ten charges of attempted murder and possession of a weapon.

The youngster is under the age of 18, according to the police, thus he cannot be named for legal reasons.

On August 1, the adolescent from Banks, Lancashire, is scheduled to appear at Liverpool Magistrates Court after being placed under remand in custody.

According to Chief Constable Serena Kennedy in the announcement, “Whilst these charges are an important turning point within this investigation, this is very much a live investigation, and we remain to work with our partners from Manchester Police and Anti-Terrorism Policing Northwest (CTPNW).”

In a news release on Tuesday, the police reported that eight additional children had been stabbed during the attack, five of whom were critically injured. Leanne Lucas, a yoga instructor who led the dance and yoga session, is one of the two adults who have also been classified in critical condition, according to The Guardian, The Times, and The BBC.

Chief Constable Kennedy stated at a press conference following the stabbing, “We believe that the adults who suffered injuries were bravely trying to safeguard the children who were being attacked.”

In a news release on Tuesday, police stated, “This event is not currently being treated as terror-related so we aren’t searching for anyone else in connection with it.”

The event happened at a Hart Street property. The event was planned to take place between 10:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m. local time, and it was marketed for children aged 6 to 11.

Swift posted a statement on her Instagram Stories on Tuesday in response to the stabbing, stating, “I am still in disbelief after yesterday’s incident in Southport. The horror of it is washing over me all the time. The terrible suffering inflicted on all those there, including first responders and families, as well as the loss of life and innocence.”

“These were simply little children at a dance class,” she said. “I am at a loss about conveying my sympathies to these families.”
